For a standardised vehicle supplied to a nationalised industry the Bristol Lodekka exhibited a fascinating array of variations between vehicles. This variety has proved invaluable over the years in identifying examples that have turned up without chassis numbers visible, often allowing the id to be narrowed down to a single operator, production year or even individual production batch. In conjunction with the list of surviving vehicles on this website this has often allowed a positive identification to be made, sometimes even from a single photo. The purpose of this page is to document these variations by individual production vehicle. Lodekkas were produced in batches called sanctions and this page lists all members of the first sanction, chassis numbers 100xxx Some features were common to all members of a sanction and these are listed below, followed by individual variations by vehicle.
Driver's Window/Beading
All vehicles in Sanction 100 had the same style of driver's window (curved with curved beading), except for the six pre-production vehicles which had their own style. Further general information about this feature can be found here.
Window Rubbers
All vehicles in Sanction 100 had black window rubbers
In addition to the column headings below the following minor variations also featured on some Lodekkas:
Cyclone flaps for automatic cleaning (Eastern Counties/Lincolnshire)
Reversing signs (Western National)
Split step on rear platform (Brighton & Hove)
Metal strip above windows (Brighton & Hove)
Extended rear rain strip (several operators)
Large hopper vent in front bulkhead window (Western SMT MCS batch only)
